New robot hand is soft and strong

If someone asked you to imagine a robot, says Daniela Rus, a professor at MITís Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), youíd probably think of a human-shaped bot or some heavy-duty industrial robot arm. ďBut for me, I would like to see a change,Ē she tells The Verge. The latest work from her team at MIT is a perfect example. Itís a robot gripper thatís designed to pick up objects, but its looks are unconventional, to say the least. Visually, it has more in common with a rubber tulip or a deflated balloon than a sci-fi robot hand. Itís this unique look that makes the gripper so potentially useful. Underneath its rubber skin is an origami skeleton thatís shaped like starfish. As gas is pumped in and out of the... Continue reading…

New robot hand is soft and strong

50 years ago, the first industrial robot arm called Unimate assembled a simple breakfast of toast, coffee, and champagne. While it might have looked like a seamless feat, every movement and ...

MIT robot's flytrap gripper can grab both fragile and heavy objects

Robot hands tend to skew toward extremes. They can pick up delicate objects or heavy objects, but rarely both. MIT CSAIL's solution? Avoid hands altogether. Its researchers ...

MIT invented a new type of robot hand that’s both adorable and terrifying

It’s more Venus fly trap than hand. The human hand is a wonder of nature. It’s strong enough to break someone’s nose but gentle enough to pick it. In turn, roboticists have ...
